As a direct result of injuries received on Nov. 22 in a driving accident,Alexander McMahan died at the Woodlawn Inn hotel in McMahan on Christmas night,December 25,1909 st 7:30 o'clock. His injuries were of a serious nature and his condition was never encouraging from the time of the accident. Following the gathering of a blood clot upon the brain a partial paralysis developed and from that time practically no hope was entertained for the unfortunate man. It will be remembered that on the morning of the 22nd,Mr. McMahan in company with a driver was coming down Ninth street hill when the horse which belonged to a local livery was attacked with blind staggers and plunged over the embankment into a gully about 35 feet below, the driver escaping. Several bones were broken and a skull injury which produced the fatal clot was also sustained. The advanced age of Mr.McMahan, was against him and he was unable to survive. Deceased was born in Allegheny county in 1843 abd was the son of Hugh McMahan and Margaret Manown McMahan. He was the original founder of Monessen and was instrumental in incorporating the borough which today bears his name. He has interested himself in public concern at all times. He has also interested himself in politics and has been a leader in his home town since its incorporation. He was formerly a member of the McMahan council and was the first chief Burgess which office he held at the time of his death. He was ailled to the Demoratic party of the old school and the tenacity with which he retained his views was characteristic of the determination with which he followed all of his convictions. In the early 80's Mr. McMahan founded and promoted the town of "Fordam",now Monessen. Several years later the project was abandoned following a re-organization and the East Side Land company was formed with the result that "Monessen" sprang into existance. In this project Mr. McMahan had secured an option on the farms of Thomas and Robert McMahan,Wm. Manown,David Owens, and Cally Shaw, the plot including his own farm. The options were turned over to the Land company for a consideration of stock and Mr. McMahan continued as one of the active promotors for a time. Many debts of kindness extended in an unostentatious manner are owing the deceased from the people of this community and many keen regrets will be felt at his death. The deceased is survived by his widow and the following children;Mrs. Anis Towers,of McMahan,Mrs. Agnes Lang,of Belle Vernon,Mrs. Thalia Fellows,of New Kensington,Hugh McMahan, now in Alabama, and Layfayette,Lillian,Nellie,Marr,Beatrice and Eloise. Three sisters and two brothers also survive. They are Miss Prudence McMahan and Mrs. Margaret Luce and Thomas of this place, and Mrs. Crowe and William McMahan,of Charleroi. Requiem High Mass will be observed at St. Leonard's Church on December 29, 1909 at 9 o'clock and the remains will them be taken to Belle Vernon for interment in the family plot.
