Albert Romer, general master mechanic of the Pittsburgh Steel Co.,and one of the company's oldest employes in point of service, died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday afternoon,August 26,1947,at his home,406 Jones street, Belle Vernon. He was 63. Mr. Romer first complained of feeling ill shortly after lunch on Tuesday and asked to be taken to his home. He refused to be treated at the mill hospital, telling associates he thought he would soon fell better. He died less than a half-hour after reaching his home. Born in Germantown, near Philadelphia,in 1884,Mr. Romer moved later to Cleveland with his family and there attended the Case School of Applied Technology,at the same time serving his apprenticeship as a machinist. His first job was with the Westinghouse Electric Corp.at Pittsburgh. He came to Monessen in 1902 to work as a machinist for the former American Sheet & Tin Plate Co.,and for a time also worked for the Page Steel & Wire Co. In 1905,Mr. Romer joined the Seamless Tube Co.of America, which later became the Pittsburgh Steel Products Co.,a subsidery of Pittsburgh Steel. In 1918 he was appointed master mechanic of the Products plant and in 1923 was transferred to the Allenport tube mill, which had just been completed ,as master mechanic. He later held the position of superintendent of the Pilger finishing mill at Allenport, and in 1937 was appointed general master mechanic for both the Allenport and Monessen plants, which position he held at his death. Possessing an engaging personality, in addition to being a superb craftsman,Mr. Romer was looked upon as a fixture in the Pittsburgh Steel organization. During his career he saw the top management of the company change several times with accompaning turnovers of departmental executives. He survived them all,and the grief over his sudden passing was general today throughout the plants, among laborers and mechanics,no less than among fellow superintendents. Mr. Romer is survived by his wife and two daughters,Mrs. William O. Steen, and Mrs. Jospeh Redigan, both of Belle Vernon. Five grandchildren also survive. He was a member of St. Sebastian R.C.Church,Belle Vernon and of Monessen Lodge 773,B.P.O. Elks. Friends are being received at Melenyzer Funeral Home in North Belle Vernon. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.,Saturday in St. Sebastian Church,Belle Vernon. Chas.L. and Edwin Melenyzer are the funeral directors in charge.
