Adelmina Riva Schmidt;96;formerly of 303 Main St.;Belle Vernon;died Saturday;June 26;1993;at 12:10 p.m.in Carcella’s Personal Care Home;Belle Vernon. She was born Aug.3;1896;in Philadelphia;a daughter of the late Frank and Josephine Brusa Riva. A 1915 graduate of Charleroi High School;in 1919 she was the first Italian graduate of California State Teachers College. Following graduation;she managed a general store until she began teaching at the Second Street and Crest Avenue Schools in Charleroi. She later tutored children in her home. Mrs.Schmidt was appointed by the late Congressman J.Buell Snyder as the first state health officer. She later performed duties in the Fayette County registrar’s office;and served as a Belle Vernon Democratic committeewoman for over 20 years. Active in community and county affairs for many years;Mrs.Schmidt was elected the first female school director in Belle Vernon in 1943. She was appointed postmaster in Belle Vernon in 1950. A member of St.Sebastian Roman Catholic Church of Belle Vernon;whe was former president of the Defense Club and the American Legion Auxiliary;both in Belle Vernon. She was also a member of the Belle Vernon Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Mrs.Schmidt was a recipient of the Outstanding Citizen Award from Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659. In addition to her parents;she was preceded in death by her husband;Rudolph Schmidt;who died Dec.31;1974;and by six brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters;Mrs.Clarence (Shirley) Booth of Hampton;Va.;and Mrs.Bernard (Beverly) Dopler of Springfield;Va.;two brothers;Victor Riva of Charleroi and Dr.Humbert Riva of Short Hills;N.J.;four sisters;Caroline Riva of Pittsburgh;Mrs.Ena Labeka of South Lehigh Acres;Fla.;Sybul Keefer of Pittsburgh and Dora R.Carpenter of Mapleview;seven grandchildren;Bruce Booth;Karen Opel;Jeffrey Booth;Alvin B.Dopler;Riva Pratt;Bruce Dopler and Chris Dopler;and five great-grandchildren;Reva Booth;Stephen Booth;Krista Pratt;Olivia Dopler and Brian Dopler. Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.in the Ferguson Funeral Home;700 Broad Ave.;Belle Vernon;where a prayer service will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.;followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.in St.Sebastian R.C.Church;Belle Vernon. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The Ferguson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
