Obituary

The Monessen Juvenile Officer and a leader in civic and fraternal organizations,Rev.H.A.S.Cooke,pastor of the Union Baptist Church here,died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday evening,April 21,1953. Rev.Cooke,who came to Monessen nine years ago from McKees Rocks,died at 9:45 p.m.at the office of his physician,Dr.George Crump. He was 54 years of age. He had suffered a number of minor attacks in the past few months. A graduate of Tuskeegee Institute,Ala.,Rev.Cooke had previously taught school in Pensacola,Fla. He was quite active in civic and fraternal circles in the district,having held a number of offices. He was chaplain of the District Council of Westmoreland County,American Legion,commander of the Joseph H.Ford Post 693,American Legion,past president of the Monessen Ministerial Association,corresponding secretary of the Youghiogheny Baptist Association,member of the Masonic Order 79,of Monessen. He was also secretary of the Monessen Midget Athelic League,a member of the Community Chest,director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and institutional head of Boy Scout Troop 1,Monessen. Rev.Cooke had served as City Juvenile officer fo the past six years. He was appointed by Mayor Hugo J.Parente. He is survived by his wife,Mrs.Carra Cooke,one daughter,Mrs.Ula Ford of Pitsburgh and a nephew,Carlton Wilson,also of Pittsburgh. Friends are being received at the Carter Funeral Home 545 McMahon avenue,until Friday,April 24,when the remains will be taken to the Union Baptist Church to lie in state until time for funeral services on Saturday,April 25,at 11 a.m. Rev.W.E.McClellan,of Uniontown will officiate at the funeral services.
