Obituary

A former Monessen man died Friday, June 28,1968 in Mercy Hospital,Pittsburgh,from a brain injury aggravated by a punch allegedly thrown during a fight the night before.  The victim was identified as Oliver Alred,52,of 2921 Webster Ave.,Pittsburgh. His body had been returned to Monessen for burial.  Police said Mr. Alred was injured in a fight over a $5 bet. They said the unidentified man who threw the punch probably did not know that Mr. Alred had died as a result of the incicdent.  Reportedly, Mr. Alred sustaind a brain injury about a month ago. Mr. Alred, born in Monessen, is survived by three children,Oliver,Jr. of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Jeralyn Harris of New York City and Gregory D. of Pittsburgh, his father, Callie Mickle of Donora,his mother, Mrs. Mary Alred of Washington,D.C.,three brothers, Philmore Mickel of Philadelphia,Curtis Mickle of New York City and Thomas Micke of Donora,three sisters, Mrs. Frances Watkins of Pittsburgh,Mrs. Aurelia Crump and Elaine Mickle, both of Donora. Friends are being received at the Beverly C. Draper Funeral Home,Monessen. Service there Tuesday, July 2,at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Clyde A. Poston,pastor of Union Baptist Church, Monessen, officiating.  Interment in Belle Vernon Cemetery.  Beverly C. Draper is the funeral director.
