Obituary

S. Ward Speers, 86, of 541 Henry St., Belle Vernon, died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at 6:15 p.m. in his home. Born Dec. 12, 1910, in Speers, he was a son of the late Van L. and Margaret L. McClain Speers. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon. Mr. Speers, who moved to Belle Vernon in 1940, was an active member of the Pittsburgh Rifle Association for many years. Known as the "Water Man," Mr. Speers was self-employed as owner/operater of Speers Water, working until age 82. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Marie Speers, who died May 28, 1994; and by four brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two sons, David W. Speers of Belle Vernon and Thomas G. Speers of Rock Hill, S.C.; one daughter, Darla J. Breza of Belle Vernon; seven grandchildren, David, Andrew, Fred and Stephanie Speers, Darla Granata, Kim Lightsey and Ryan Breza; and three great-grandchildren, Jamie and Joshua Granata and Tyler Lightsey.He is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Van Speers of Daisytown.   Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ferguson Funeral Home Inc., 700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,where services will be held Saturday at 11a.m. with the Rev. S. Miles McConnell,pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon,officiating,  Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery.  The Ferguson Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
