Col. John C. Peth,85,a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel,who served as chief egineer of the Monessen and Allenport plants of old Pittsburgh Steel Corp.,died Sunday, May 14,1978 at 9:30 a.m. in the Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla. Col. Peth resided at 6909 Ninth St.,St. Petersburg, Fla. He was born in Pittsburgh on Aug. 25,1882,a son of the late Charles and Clara Frazier Peth and had resided in Belle Vernon for many years before moving to St. Petersburg 13 years ago. Col. Peth was a lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Army for 33 years before he retired and then joined Pittsburgh Steel Corp. where he worked as chief engineer at both the Allenport and Monessen plants. He was a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church of St. Petersburg and was a member of the F&AM Lodge 643 of Belle Vernon,the Consistory of Pittsburgh,Lodge of Perfection in Uniontown and the Syria of Pittsburgh. He was also a member and past commander of the Belel Vernon American Legion post. Survivors include his widow, Nannie Endres Peth;two sons, Charles Peth of Manlius,N.Y. and John C. Peth Jr.of Rio de Janerio,Brazil;one sister,Mrs. Park Garrett of Pittsburgh and six grandchildren. Services will be held in St. Petersburg on Tuesday and friends will be received in the Shleby D. Ferguson Funeal Home in Belle Vernon on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and unil Friday at 1 p.m.,the time of the service,with Pastor R. Dawson Hopson,pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon,officiating. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Shelby D. Ferguson,funeral director in charge.
