Dr.Charles L.Melenyzer of Rostraver Twp.died Wed.;Jan.15;1986;at 8:45 a.m. in Monongahela Valley Hosp.;Carroll Twp.Dr.Melenyzer;a prominent businessman & civic leader in the Mon Valley;was 94.He was born Dec.3;1891;at Maple Creek;Pa.a son of the late Charles L.& Stephanie Melenyzer.In addition to his parents;he also was preceded in death by a daughter;Gladys M.Kelly in 1978.He was a dairy farmer in Rostraver Twp.;& he owned and operated the Melenyzer Furniture stores in Donora;Monongahela and Charleroi.He ran the Charleroi store from 1919-1981.In July of 1912;he opened a furniture business in Belle Vernon.At the same time;he also was a funeral director and operated the Melenyzer Funeral Home in Belle Vernon. In his 45 years as a funeral director;he conducted approximately 5;000 funerals.In addition he owned the Gladmore Hotel in Miami;Fla.;& was the prime developer of the Rosemont Plan in Rost.Twp.;& the Charmel Manor in Speers.He attended Ohio Northern Univ. Among his many accomplishments in his lifetime are the following: Past president of United Furniture Stores;vice president of Peoples National Bank in Belle Vernon;1920;vice president of First National Bank in Charleroi;1934;member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Wash.;school director in Rostraver Twp.for 12 yrs;chairman of the Mon Valley Chapter of The American Red Cross;1966;Charmel Farms in Rostraver Twp.;1950. Organizer of the C.L.Melenyzer Golf Tournment held annually at Mon Valley Country Club;member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Charleoi Industrial Development Corp.;honorary Life Member of the Charleoi Chamber of Commerce;life member of the Charleroi-Monessen Hospital Assoc.;past president of Heritage Corporation of Chicago;charter member of Rostraver Twp.Business Assoc.;member of Monongahela Chamber of Commerce. A community-minded citizen;he was a member of many organizations. Among them were Mon Valley Country Club;Downtown Press Club;Pitts.Athletic Assoc.;Rotary Club;Elks Club and City Farmers Club. His work as a great humanitarian and his love for the Mon Valley earned him numerous awards. Among them are the following;Chosen as Citizen of the Year;1978 by Post 22 of The Amer.Legion in Charleroi;Doctorate Degree in Commercial Science in 1961 from Bethany College in Bethany;W.Va.;Bronze Bison Award;1971 from Bethany College;Allison R.Maxwell Award;1978;Lifetime membership in the Amer.Red Cross;1979. He was also involved with Mon Valley Hospital for many years. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the hospital from June 1977-August 1982;and he served on the Physician Recruitment Committee of the Board of Directors from 1977-82. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of the health care corporation. The sixth floor at Mon Valley Hosp.is dedicated to Dr.Melenyzer & his wife;Rose;in recognition of their pioneering support and planning for the Mon Valley growth & development.The C.L.& Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion;the 1st cancer center of its kind in Fay.;Greene & Wash.counties;is named in their honor in recognition of their support and financial contributions which have aided in the delivery of cancer patient treatments to residents of the Mon Valley. He is survived by his wife;Rose Sweeney Melenyzer;a sister;Rose Hannen;Orlando;Fla.;and nieces & nephews. Friends will be received in the James Stump Funeral Home;Thurs.& Fri 2 to 9 p.m.Mass on Saturday at 10 a.m.in St.Sebastian Church.Interment in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
