Gust Melissas of the Heritage Nursing Home;Baltimore;Md.;formerly of Monessen;died Friday;Jan.10;1986;in the Heritage Nursing Home;Baltimore;Md. He was 92. Mr.Melissas was born in June of 1894;in Chios;Greece; a son of the late Nicholas and Mary Melissas. He was a retired employee of the Monessen School District. Mr.Melissas came to Monessen in 1915 from Chios;Greece;where he was well known as a library fundraiser. In 1966;he and his late wife;Mary;who died in 1967;were honored by the Grecian government and by the mayor of Athens;Greece;for their many charitable and civic contributions. Mr.Melissas was president of the Monessen Chapter of the United Chios Society of America. He also served as national treasurer of that organization. In addition to his parents and his wife;Mr.Melissas was also preceded in death by two brothers;Steve Melissas in 1968;and Michael Melissas;in 1972;and by a sister;Anna Pappas;in 1955. Surviving are three daughters;Mrs.Frank (Marie) Herman of Gettysburg;Pa.;Mrs.Robert (Catherine) Valko of Kingsville;Md.;and Joan Haugen of Sproughton;Wisc.;and five grandchildren. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Stephen D.Yoney Jr.Funeral Home;First Street and Schoonmaker Avenue;Monessen. A Trisagion Service will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. A Blessing Service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. in the funeral home;followed by additional funeral services at 4:30 p.m.in St.Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church;Monessen;with the Rev.Gregory C.Wingenhach;pastor;officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery;Belle Vernon;Pa. The family suggests contributions in Mr.Melissas’ memory may be made to the Monessen High School library. The Stephen D.Yoney Jr.Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
