Obituary

Clifford G.Dickson,a former teacher and veteran athletic coach at two Mon Valley area high schools,died at 5:30 a.m.Friday,May 2,1980,in Monongahela Valley Hospital,Carroll Twp. Mr.Dickson,who was 75,lived at 207 Liberty Ave.in the Lynnwood section of Belle Vernon. He was born in Canonsburg Jan.20,1905,son of the late Alvin and Margaret Beery Dickson. He graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1926 and received a master's degree form the University of Pittsburgh. He came to Perryopolis as a teacher and basketball and football coach in 1927. He also served in the same capacity at the former Belle Vernon High School from 1930 to 1938. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon and was a former member of the board of trustees of the church. During World War II,Mr.Dickson served as a field officer for the American Red Cross,being attached to the 11th Armored Division. During that service he received a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service,the order signed by then President Harry Truman. He also was a member of Sigma Phi Epsioln fraternity while at Ohio Northern. In 1946 he became a buyer for the then Pittsburgh Steel Co.,having retired from the then Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp. He also for a brief period operated a sporting good store in North Belle Vernon. Surviving are his widow,Thelma Hull Dickson,one sister,Grace of Dublin,Ohio,and two nephews. Friends are being received from 7 to 9 p.m.Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.Sunday in the Shelby D.Ferguson Funeral Home,700 Broad Ave.,North Belle Vernon. Services will be held in the funeral home Monday with the Rev.Charles LaPlaca,pastor of the First Presbyterian Church,officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The family requests that so desired memorials can be made to Mon Valley Hospital.
