Obituary

Darnell Kenneth Anderson, 46, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Monessen, departed this life on Sunday, May 31, 2026. Darnell, also known as DK, was born on Nov. 19, 1979, a mill town kid from the Steel Valley of Pittsburgh. He began his musical studies on tenor saxophone at the age of 11. At the age of 16, he started playing the piano and became interested in composition. In 2001, Anderson premiered his first work for big band at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Winterfest Festival. Darnell was a veteran of the Roger Humphries RH Factor and Big Band (2001 to 2007). In 2007, he stepped away from the public eye. During his self-imposed hiatus, Darnell immersed himself in the contemplation of music. Living an ascetic-like life in a small house in the woods, he challenged himself to recognize the musical chords of train whistles as the sound bounced through the valleys. Observing sounds he heard in his surroundings started to affect the way he composed and related to music. In 2016 Darnell released his first album as lead, 8th Window, under the artist name DK Anderson’s Cypher, including several original compositions showing where inner space and outer space meet. Darnell’s second album, Quantum Truth, released in 2018 exploring the pursuit of possibilities, received laudatory reviews including a notable one from Raul da Gama. “Quantum Truth as the album is appropriately titled, has a number of surprises. Two of these are Thelonious Monk anthems; one being Epistrophy and the other being Round Midnight. On both, Mr. Anderson not only takes on Mr. Monk’s death-defying harmonic conceptions (especially on the former); a challenge on any instrument. Mr. Anderson, the saxophonist melds Mr. Monk’s crackling melody with Charlie Rouse’s famous solo excursions, but also —quite magically — manages to invent a fabulously inverted rhythmic groove as well.” Songbook, Darnell’s third album, is a collection of wellloved songs inviting the listener into a groove matrix that is continuous. He wanted the listener to imagine themself at a party after hour, but the energy is high. This album features several works of Cole Porter, along with other popular music standards. Darnell challenged himself to play all of the piano for this album and recommended listening to an up-tempo arrangement of All Through The Night. This arrangement demonstrates the many ways to harmonically get from point A to point B. The listener will hear an entirely different way to interpret Cole Porter’s main progression each time, and right when you get a feel for this reharmonization the entire key is taken up one step. While music was Darnell’s primary interest, he also loved to cook. He regularly made his own bread dough and grew fresh herbs and cayenne peppers to delight anyone having the pleasure of visiting his kitchen. Darnell was preceded in death by his father, Darnell Andrew Anderson; stepfather, William Scott Sr.; grandparents, John Joseph Bright Jr. and Velma Lee Matthews Joyner; and grandparents, Emanuel Benjamin Anderson and Thelma Lilly Chapman Anderson. Darnell is survived by his wife, Diane Elaine Schnur Anderson; his mother, Gloria Eileen Bright Anderson; his sister, Toscha J. Bright Blalock along with her husband, Marshall Joel Blalock III and their son, Malek Blalock of Philadelphia; as well as a host of aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Darnell will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. While we grieve his passing, we celebrate a life of love, strength of character and enduring legacy. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 230, Reed Ave., Monessen, with funeral service to follow. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Final celebration has been gently placed in the hands of HOUSE OF JACKSON MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 546 Thompson Ave., Donora, 724-379-5420, Karl Jackson, funeral director.
