Obituary

George M. Popella, 90, of Belle Vernon, Rostraver Township, died Sunday, April 15, 2012, in the Victoria House, Monessen. Born in Pricedale on Sept. 4, 1921, he was the son of the late George J. and Anna (Mustybrook) Popella. George was a retired crane operator for Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in Monessen. He was an avid sportsman and he loved to hunt and fish. He was also an amateur radio operator under the call sign WA3EBJ and was Catholic by faith. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. and Mary Popella, of Rostraver Township, two grandsons, Robert M. Popella Jr., of Beaver Falls, and Michael R. Popella, of Montgomery, Pa., four great-grandchildren, Tegan, Heidi, Sierra and Sylvia Popella, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois (Dixon) Popella, second wife, Irene (Swan) Popella, and three brothers, Joseph, Steve and James Popella. There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be celebrated at a later date. Interment will be held in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the JAMES C.
