Metro Backo, 89, of Belle Vernon, went to be with the Lord, in his home, with his loving family by his side, on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. A son of the late Rocco and Helen Palo Backo, he was born on January 15, 1928 in Hunker, PA. A lifelong resident of the Mon Valley, Metro graduated from Rostraver High School with the Class of 1946 and then served his country in the Army during WWII. He later worked in Baker's Mine as a Machinist until he retired. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed many outdoor activities, such as hunting, playing horseshoes, playing softball for the Pricedale Union Church, and watching all kinds of sports. Metro also enjoyed listening to Country Western Music, watching old cowboy movies, playing Euchre, Pinochle, and doing word searches. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jack Backo and his wife Charlene of Belle Vernon; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marla Dean and her husband Thomas of Fayette City, and Kellie Mori and her husband David of Belle Vernon; four grandchildren, Scott and Michele Backo, Brian and Gina Back, D.J. and Chrissy Mori, and April Mori and Brennan Hill; seven great grandchildren, Ryan, Jordan, Cecelia, Taylor, Bailey, Oliver and Elizabeth. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Bakewell Backo, who passed away on May 12, 2011; a granddaughter, Amy Mori; five brothers, Michael, John, Joseph, Charles and Steve Backo; four sisters, Eva Smichnick, Mary Reeder, Anna Ray and Helen Koslosky. Friends will be received on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ferguson Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., (724-929-5300), 700 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon. www.FergusonFuneralHomeAndCrematory.com. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home, with Rev. Bruce Merritt officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
