Obituary

Robert L. Mason, Sr., 68, of Belle Vernon, went to be with the angels on Friday, September 25, 2009 in Mon Valley Hospital. A son of the late Lowman and Eleanor Hilty Mason, he was born in Belle Vernon on January 25, 1941. Protestant by faith, he was a member of the Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659, the Fairhope Rod and Gun Club and was an organizer and charter member of the Mon Valley Chordsmen. A lifelong resident of Belle Vernon, Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved woodworking and managed the Belle Vernon Moose softball team for ten years. A U.S. Army veteran, he served with the field artillery, service battalion, 2nd howitzer division. He had worked as a carpet installer for the former Stern’s Furniture Company and retired from the Allenport Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Company. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Judy Swaney Mason, one daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Bill Owens of Belle Vernon, one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Tina Mason of Newell, three sisters, Janice Garletts of Mt. Pleasant, Diane Angel and Rebecca Pezzelle, both of Belle Vernon and two grandchildren, Meghan Betham and William Owens, both of Belle Vernon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Emily Griest. Graveside services will be Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 11 A.M. with Rev. J.E. Mitchell officiating.
