Obituary

Matushka Sophia Hubiak Soroka, formally of Miami, Florida, fell asleep in the Lord, peacefully, on Sunday, July 1, 2012. A daughter of the late Archpriest Afanasy and Susan Wanchisen Hubiak, she was born in Akron, OH on July 14, 1925. Sophia was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church of Miami, FL and was also involved in the Federated Russian Orthodox Clubs until her recent move to Pennsylvania. Matushka Sophia was a choir director for many years, and a dedicated servant to her Lord. She retired from AT&T (the former Bell Telephone Company) having worked in both Akron and Miami. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Very Rev. Daniel and Dunia Hubiak of Maryland, brother-in-law, Very Rev. Michael Kovach of Lancaster, sisters-in-law Anne Hubiak of Akron, OH, Augustine Soroka of Charleroi, Steveanna Lis of Hopewell, Helen and Bill Evansky of Forest Hills, Vera and Tony Trona of Canonsburg and Martha and Ron Zeli of Belle Vernon and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Archpriest Theodore Soroka on February 8, 2012, one sister, Olga Kovach, two brothers, William and Nicholas Hubiak and the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eva Smith, Michael Soroka, Ann Soroka, Steve Soroka and Irene Goresh. Friends will be received in the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, Mary Street, Belle Vernon on Wednesday, July 4 from 4 until 8 P.M. with Panikhida services at 7:30 P.M. Funeral Services will be in the Holy Resurrection Church at 9 A.M. Thursday, July 5 with Rev. Samuel Smolcic presiding. Interment will follow in the Belle Vernon Cemetery. Sophia's family requests that no floral arrangements be sent, but rather donations may be made to the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church Endowment Fund or to Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Miami, FL. Arrangements are being handled by the Ferguson Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., (724-929-5300), 700 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon.
