Obituary

Elmer E. Bamford, 104, of Rostraver Township, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, in Washington Commons Personal Care in Bridgeville. Born in Rostraver Township on April 9, 1904, he was the son of the late James and Anna (Luce) Bamford. He had a great interest in flying, having been born only four months after the first historic flight of the Wright Brothers. His interest developed after witnessing an emergency landing on the family farm in 1924, and from then on flying became his passion. Mr. Bamford eventually bought his own plane, which he would use to take people for rides and even perform stunts, such as wing walking. In addition to flying, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling to South Padre Island, Texas for 37 consecutive winters, and Mr. Bamford was still driving his car at the age of 101. He was retired from USX, Irvin Works, where he was a foreman. Mr. Bamford was a member of Fells United Methodist Church in Rostraver Township. He is survived by his son, David E. Bamford, of Pittsburgh, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Edith H. (Phillips) Bamford, on May 21, 1999, several brothers and one sister. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Belle Vernon/Rostraver Township (724-929-7934), www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com, where a funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Scott Berkley officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery, Rostraver Township.
