Leon V. ‘Pappy’ Johnson Sr.; 83; of Monessen; died suddenly at his home on Sunday; Dec. 7; 2008. He leaves his devoted wife; Marie Wilkins-Johnson; sons; Leon V. (Jackie) Johnson Jr. and Kevin (Dee) Brown; daughter-in-law; Marguerite Johnson; stepbrothers; Scipio; Luther; Theodore; William; Charles and Fred White; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. Pappy graduated from Monessen High School with the class of 1944; where he was the Mon Valley scoring leader. He was employed for many years by the City of Monessen; where he later served as street commissioner. He also worked for the Vitale Corporation in the construction industry. A lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church in Belle Vernon (Rostraver Township); Pappy served as a Deacon; chairman of the Trustee Board; Sunday school superintendent and choir member. He was a member of Monessen Lodge No. 79; Prince Hall F& AM for 55 years; and American Legion Anthony Madison Post No. 704; Mon Valley SAC; and the Mon Valley NAACP. Pappy was inducted into the Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 1998; the Monessen Hall of Fame and the Monessen Quarterbacks Club. Pappy also was an avid bowler. He was preceded in death by his son; Ronald H. Johnson; in 1991; two brothers; George and Oliver Johnson; and one sister; Florence Womack. Family and friends may call Thursday; Dec. 11; from 2 to 9 p.m. in Antioch Baptist Church; 945 Henry St.; Belle Vernon. Home-going services will be held Friday; Dec. 12; at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Clifford Carter officiating. Mon Valley Shipmates will hold a service at 3 p.m. Thursday; followed by Masonic service at 7 p.m.; both in Antioch Baptist Church.
