Obituary

John Faryna, 82, of Ellsworth, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, in Adult Assisted Living of Dunlevy following a brief illness. He was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Poland, a son of the late Michal and Olga (Klubiwna) Faryna. He was a survivor of both Russian and German prison camps, having been exiled from his home and his family during World War II. Mr. Faryna was liberated by U.S. forces and joined the Polish Free Army and was severely wounded in combat. In 1949, through the help of the Catholic Welfare Organization, he was able come to the United States and would eventually become a naturalized citizen, which was made official in 1954. On Oct. 9, 1952, being fluent in five languages, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and became a veteran of the Korean War before his honorable discharge in 1954. Mr. Faryna served with the 434th Engineer Construction Battalion and, for his service, was awarded the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He had been employed by Lee Norris Inc. of Charleroi for over 32 years before retiring from the parts department in 1988. Mr. Faryna had been a long-time member of Ave Maria Roman Catholic Parish of Bentleyville, the Polish Club of Bentleyville, and Bentleyville American Legion Post No. 165. He enjoyed woodworking, bingo, gardening, and he had a special love for animals. On Nov. 6, 1954, he married Stella (Kalarchak) Faryna, the love of his life, who died Nov. 29, 1997, after more than 43 years of marriage. Surviving is one daughter, Barbara Hollier and husband Gary, of Eighty Four, two sons: Michael Faryna and wife Deborah, of Donora, and Frank Faryna and wife Della, of Ellsworth, one step-daughter, Louise Watkins and husband Gordon, of Speers, 15 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Deceased, in addition to his wife and parents, is a step-daughter, Joann Axton, one granddaughter, Cheryl Ann Axton, and a brother-in-law, Frank Tanski. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 619 Main St., Bentleyville (724-239-2191), where prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Ave Maria R.C. Church, Bentleyville, with the Rev. Gary Krummert as celebrant. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
