Obituary

Elmira L. Luce Steer, 88, formerly of North Belle Vernon, passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, in Providence Place, an assisted living facility in Chambersburg. A daughter of the late George and Germaine Castine Kyle, she was born in Gibsonton on Jan. 3, 1921. Elmira was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon, where she taught Sunday School for many years, the United Methodist Women, the Vernon Belles, the Golden Agers and the Gypsy Belle Gadabouts of the Red Hat Society. She was the chairwoman of the Food and Fellowship program through her church for 15 years, had been a Girl Scout leader and, for many years, ran the concession stand for the Bellmar Boosters. She had been a resident of Belle Vernon for most of her life, until moving to Chambersburg three years ago. Mrs. Steer had been employed for many years at the former Et Cetera Balloons and Crafts store in North Belle Vernon. Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie Hegedus, and husband Louis, of Chambersburg, two sons, Norman Luce, and wife Sara, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Barry Luce, and partner, Tom Boycks, of Lake Mills, Wisc., seven grandchildren, Amy, Renee, Lynette, Jodi, Bonnie, Erin and Josh, and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernon Luce, her second husband, Clifford Steer, two sisters, Grace Mustybrook and Denise Paluso, and six brothers, George, John, Robert, Ralph, Charles and Gene Kyle. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 724-929-5300, 700 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon, www.fergusonfuneralhomeandcrematory.com. Funeral services will be in the First United Methodist Church on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. David P. Zona officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
