Obituary

Roy R. Gates, 95, of Bentleyville, formerly of Belle Vernon, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008. He was a resident of Thorpe's Personal Care Home in North Charleroi. A son of the late Curtis and Hilda Smock Gates, he was born in Monessen on June 29, 1913. Roy was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon, the Pennsylvania National Guard in his younger years and retired from the Monessen plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Company. He also was a farmer for several years in the Bentleyville area and an avid bowler. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Doris Jane Ramsey Gates, who also resides in Thorpe's Personal Care Home, one son and daughter-in-law, Russell L. and Mary Gates, of Bentleyville, one granddaughter, Lisa M. Leach and husband Daniel, and two great-grandchildren, Hunter D. and Hannah M. Leach, all of Bentleyville, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis and Earl Gates. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY INC., 700 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon (724-929-5300), www.fergusonfuneralhomeandcrematory.com. Funeral services will be in the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. David Zona officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. If friends wish, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Research.
