Obituary

Glenda Surovchak, 100, of Keller, Texas, formerly of Rostraver Township, passed away Friday, March 2, 2012. Glenda was born Dec. 23, 1911, in Beaver Falls, Pa., to Harry C. and Anna Jewell Richwine. She was a retired teacher of the educable (mentally handicapped) for Southmoreland School District Intermediate Unit 7 in Westmoreland County. Glenda earned her bachelor of science degree in early childhood education and master's degree with certification to teach the mentally handicapped from California University of Pennsylvania. She was a member of the National Education Association, Pa., State Education Association and National Retired Teachers Association of Westmoreland County (PSEA-R). Glenda was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monessen for over 75 years, where she had been extremely active in choir, teaching Sunday school, adult class moderator, and was a member of Lutheran Church Women. She was the first woman elected to serve on the church council, was a lay assistant and on occasion was the supply pastor. She was active for many years as a leader and volunteer trainer for the Girl Scouts of America. Mrs. Surovchak was one of the founders of the Monessen Chapter 2752 of the American Association of Retired Persons, where she served as the first president and the group's tour director for many years. She also volunteered with the Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging in the Diversified Human Services Department Elder Care, Therapeutic Activity Center. She was a member of the Mon Valley Council on Aging for many years and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Glenda moved to Texas in 1997 and immediately became active in St. Andrew Lutheran Church as a member of the Bible study class and helped to make Bible books in braille. She also volunteered at the North East Emergency Center (NEED). She was also very active in the Keller Senior Citizens Group where assisted with the craft program and played in the Keller Senior Citizens Kitchenaire Band. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Surovchak was preceded in death by her first husband, John A. Stanley in 1958, her second husband, Joseph Surovchak in 1991, her brothers, Jack E. Richwine in 1987, and Harry R. Richwine in 2007, and stepsons, William Surovchak in 1977, and Richard Surovchak in 2007. She is survived by her son, Jack C. Stanley and wife, Carol Stroh Stanley, with whom she made her home in Keller, Texas, grandchildren, Glenn Stanley and wife, Michelle, Lara Stanley Gonzales and husband, Joe, Scott, William, Kevin and Robert Surovchak, 11 great-grandchildren, including Madison and Meredith Stanley, Jared Odom and Jessica Lacey Surovchak, a sister, Betty Jewell Richwine, of Conway, Ark., and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be welcomed from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 9, at RHOME FUNERAL HOME, Family Owned and Operated as a Member of the Golden Rule, 1209 Grand Blvd., Monessen, (724) 684-4061. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Monessen. Internment to follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monessen, or to St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Hurst.
