James C. Chinny Johnston; 93; of Speers Hill; passed away Monday; July 8; 2013; in Lafayette; La. A son of the late Robert and Isabell Carrick Johnston; he was born in Floreffe; Jan. 24; 1920. James was a member of the Pricedale Union Church; Russian Club of Charleroi and; during his years at the former Rostraver High School; was a star basketball player. He worked as a steel worker at the Allenport Plant of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel until his retirement in 1979. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Crowley during World War II; and was awarded six battle stars during his service. Jim was an avid gardener and was well known for his prized tomatoes. Survivors include his wife of 66 years; Catherine Kornosky Johnston of Speers Hill; one son; James Johnston of Crownsville; Md.; two daughters and sons-in-law; Judy and David Johnson of Barnesville; Md.; and Kim and John Krener of Lafayette; La.; one sister; Florence Weir of Rostraver Township; and six grandchildren; James Johnston III; Scott Johnston; David Johnson; Abby Johnson; John Cody Krener and Cole Krener. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by three sisters; Agnes Krett; Isabell Johnston and Martha McBride; and two brothers; Thomas and Robert Johnston.
