Robert A. Hammitt, Sr., 88, of Belle Vernon, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018 in Mon Valley Hospital. A son of the late Herman and Margaret Melarkey Hammitt, he was born in Monessen on June 11, 1929. Catholic by faith, he was known for his love of writing poetry. Robert had been employed as a printer for 35 years by the Valley Independent and he retired from Corning Glass after 9 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Sisley Hammitt, two daughters and a son-in-law; Tammy Jean and Paul Kunsa of Monessen and Kathy Jo Collinet of Belle Vernon, a son, Robert Hammitt, Jr. of New Castle, 3 grandchildren, and a brother, Norman Hammitt of Monessen. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Ann Bradley and a brother, Thomas Hammitt. There will be no public visitation or services.
