Obituary

Surrounded by her daughters and extended family members, Mary M. Horvat of Woodstock, N.Y., died at home on July 23, 2009, following a brief illness. She was 77. Arriving in Woodstock in 2007 to live with her daughter, Nancy Smith and Donald Allen, she quickly became a beloved member of the Woodstock community. Survived also by her daughter, Mary Jo Horvat, of Wildwood Crest, N.J., she is also remembered as a wonderful grandmother to Kristen Smith, of Beverly Hills, Fla. and Patrick Smith, of Woodstock. Hers was a life well-lived, as a sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Horvat in 2001, theirs was a marriage that spanned 49 years. As a resident of Charleroi, she grew up in a family of nine children and is predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. Her sister, Julie Schwartz, of Las Vegas, Nev., survives her. Mrs. Horvat also leaves behind her close friends Beverly Spotts, of Monessen, Eleanor Stanish, of Charleroi, and former son-in-law Bill Smith, of Kingston, N.Y. She is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews. Known and much loved for her cooking, sense of humor, her love of animals and a strong belief in family, Mrs. Horvat was a parishioner at the Mary Mother of the Church in Charleroi. She was interred at the Belle Vernon Cemetery in Belle Vernon. Donations may be sent to Hospice or the ASPCA.
