Obituary

Gasper Garofalo, 91, of Monessen, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, in IHS, Greensburg. He was born in Rogliano, Italy, on Oct. 29, 1914, the son of the late Angelo and Josephine Grano Garofalo. Mr. Garofalo moved from Italy to Monessen in 1929. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus Council 954, American Legion Post 28, Sons of Italy, and MARS, all of Monessen, and was a former member of the Monessen AARP and the Italian-American Heritage Society. Mr. Garofalo owned and operated Gaspers Food Market located at 4th Street and Knox Avenue in Monessen for many years. He then worked for 30 years as a salesman for the former Apter Brothers Co. and Atlas Merchandising in Charleroi. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant and airplane maintenance technician. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Olga Dudra Garofalo, of Monessen, two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary A. and Debra Garofalo, of Akron, Ohio, and Robert J. Sr. and Cindy Garofalo, of Monessen, a sister, Pina Rizzo of Rogliano, Italy, four grandchildren, Kevin Garofalo, of San Diego, Calif., Angela Garofalo, of Akron, Ohio, Tina Solomon and husband Brian, of Morgantown, W.Va., and Robert J. Rob Garofalo Jr., of Monessen, and by nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Silvio and Trieste Garofalo. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 441 Reed Ave., Monessen (724-684-8750). Services will be held on Thursday, June 29, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R.C. Church. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. On Wednesday evening, the American Legion Post 28 will conduct services at 7:15 p.m., and the Knights of Columbus Council 954 will conduct services at 8 p.m.
