Obituary

Isabelle Genevieve Clark Hurley, 95, of Belle Vernon, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, in Mon Valley Hospital. Born Aug. 19, 1910, in McKeesport, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Genevieve Gorman Clark. She married the late John Edwin Hurley, with whom she celebrated almost 55 years of marriage. Mrs. Hurley was well known through her years as an employee of The Valley Independent, starting as a stringer for sports for 12 years, then 25 years as the society editor, retiring from the daily work after 37 years. She also worked for the Belle Vernon Enterprise. Mrs. Hurley continued to write for The Valley Independent as a contributing columnist until the spring of 2005. Mrs. Hurley was extremely active in her community as a volunteer for many organizations, including two years as chairman of the PTA Publicity Committee, 20 years as a member of the Mon Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross Board of Directors, including two years as Chapter chairman, as well as 10 years as United Way of Mon Valley secretary. She also was a member of the Pennsylvania News Women Chapter. Mrs. Hurley was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Monongahela, an active member of the former Trinity Episcopal Church of Monessen, teaching Sunday school, and she was a member of the Women's Guild. Mrs. Hurley was a lifelong member of the Tuesday Evening Civic Club in Belle Vernon, serving as president for two three-year terms. She received many awards, including the 1972 Belle Vernon Booster Award, Belle Vernon Rotary Outstanding Citizen Award in 1985, the 1991 Mon Valley Pitt Golden Panther of the Year, and, in September 2003, was inducted into the Belle Vernon Area High School Football Hall of Fame as its first female sports writer. She was a strong supporter of the Mon Valley ARC, a 25-year member of SCORE, president of the Belle Vernon Sesquicentennial Celebration and was also a strong supporter of the performing arts. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Doris Jean Morley, her son-in-law, the Rev. Arthur James Morley, and her grandson, Arthur David Morley. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Eleanor Clark, of Belle Vernon, and their children, Kimberly, Lisa, Amy Beth, and Kenneth, and their grandchildren, Logan and Connor, a granddaughter and husband, Deborah Jo and James Anderson, of Monessen, a granddaughter, Nancy Jones, of Wilmington, Del., and a granddaughter-in-law, Debra Sue Morley. She also was the great-grandmother to John, David, Tiffany and Jay Jones, Jim and Jessica Morley, the step great-grandmother to Laura, James, Brian and Jennifer Anderson, and the great- great-grandmother to Caitlynn Rose and Zachary David Anderson, of Belle Vernon. Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC. and CREMATION SERVICE, www.fergusonfuneralhome.net, (724-929-5300), a Golden Rule Member Firm, 700 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John Fierro officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
