Harriet L. Ward-Wilcox; 78; of Pittsburgh; went home to be with the Lord on Saturday; Aug. 20; 2005. She was born Dec. 15; 1926; in Monessen; a daughter of the late Edward and Margaret Ward. She was a 1944 graduate of Monessen High School and a graduate of the School of Cosmetology. Mrs. Wilcox was the first black secretary to be employed at the Westmoreland County Courthouse in Greensburg. She was a graduate of Connelly Skilled Training Center; Pittsburgh Public School System; where she received her license to become a Licensed Practical Nurse in October 1964. Mrs. Wilcox was employed as a nurse at Magee-Womens Hospital; Pittsburgh; and later retired from The Veterans Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was baptized in Union Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband; Cortez Wilcox Sr.; two sons; Cortez Wilcox Jr. and Derek Wayne Wilcox; three sisters; Dorothy Carter; Edna Gambrill; and a twin sister to Robert Ward; five brothers; Ernest; Albert; Donald; Robert and Edward Jr. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters; Celeste James and Alyce Aldrich; two brothers; Edward Boogie and Herman Ward; four sisters; Mary Ward-Smith; Darlene Pugh; Minister Millie Thomas and Lois Ward; seven grandchildren; Charles; Tracie; Lisa; Derek; Kimberly; Larry Jr. and Aaron; and seven great-grandchildren; Santosha; Ikeem; Daron; Tiara; Nazir; Denzel and Brennan. The family will receive friends on Tuesday at WARDEN’S FUNERAL HOME; 1100 N. Homewood Ave.; Pittsburgh; from 6 to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church; Monessen. A Homegoing Service will be held Thursday; Aug. 25; at 11 a.m. in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Griffin E. Mason; pastor; officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to ALDRICH FUNERAL HOMES; 431 East Ninth Ave.; Munhall.
