Joseph Lucie, aged 30 years, a glassworker, was the second victim within 36 hours of an assassin in the neighboring town of Belle Vernon. Lucie died Monday night,August 8,1912 in the McKeesport hospital living exactly 24 hours after beng stabbed in the region of the heart with a butcher knife. The attack on Lucie occurred near " Seldom Seen," one of the most notorious and dangerous sections in the town. Detectives of Washington, Fayette and Westmoreland counties are searching the country round about far and wide for the alleged murderer, Nick Venerri. Up until a late hour Tuesday afternoon the detectives were unable to give out any information as to the whereabouts of Venerri, he seems to have covered up his tracks well and made his escape. Lucie with a number of companions and fellow countrymen were playing cards on Sunday night. A heated argument arose when Venerri lost a big jackpot to Lucie and the game broke up with bad blood existing between the two. Lucie started home with his winnings and was accompanied by three of his friends. While passing a dark spot a short distance beyond "Seldom Seen" a man supposed to have been Venerri jumped out and attacked Lucie with a butcher knife. The four gave battle to their assailant but were forced to flee leaving Lucie lying by the road. Later they returned and carried Lucie home and he was sent to the McKeesport hospital Monday morning. The fact that he was not taken to the hospital until so late and that he lived so long after his terrible injury makes the case one of the most remarkable that has ever come to the notice of the doctors at the hospital. Lucie's assailant is said to have started toward Pittsburgh and the police of Allegheny county are keeping a close watch for any one answering the fugitive's description. The town is in a turmoil over the excitement and strain following the two murders since early Sunday morning and the entire police force is extending every effort to locate the perpetrators of the dastardly crimes. County detective John Smith of Uniontown has been detailed on the case.
