Obituary

James Sopcic, the eleven year old son of Mr.and Mrs. Peter Sopcic of Naomi,a short distance above Belle Vernon, was drowned in the Monongahala river Thursday afternoon,June 7,1923 about 4 o'clock.  This was the first victim of the bathing season in this district and officials are taking steps to prohibit children from bathing along the river in places other than where beaches have been established and older persons are always on guard.  The lad with several companions had gone to the river during the hot afternoon and he ventured out beyond his depth and disappeared.  His cries for help as he went down for the first time were heard by his companions who attempted to go to his rescue, but he had gone down for the third and last time before thay could reach him. They immediately sounded an alarm and Harry Matson recovered the body by diving to the bottom of the river a short time afterwards.  The remains were taken to the McCrory morgue in Fayette City and viewed by Deputy Coroner J.L.Blake after which they were removed to the home of the parents from which place funeral services were held.
