Eleven-year-old Richard Thomas Nicoden's love for football cost him his life Saturday,October 3,1943. The Belle Vernon youth was killed almost instantly when he stumbled while moving backward to catch a pass and struck his head on a stone curbing,fracturing his skull. Richard was playing in a sandlot game with his friends when the tragedy occurred. The youth,who is a son of Mr.and Mrs. Paul Nicoden of 412 Fayette street,Belle Vernon,is believed to have been dead even before his chums reached him. All attempts to revive him with a resucitator while enroute to the Charleroi-Monessen hospital proved futile and he was pronounced dead on arrival. Death was attributed to the skull fracture. Richard was a seventh grade student in the North Belle Vernon schools and was a member of the Monessen United Presbyterian Church. A popular youth,the fall sandlot games were traditional. In addition to his mother and father,who is assistant superintendent of the Page Steel and Wire Monessen works,Richard is survived by a younger brother, David,8. Funeral services will be held from his home Tuesday afternoon,October 5,at 2 p.m. with interment following in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
