Obituary

Mrs. Sophia Nickel,widow of the late Dr. John R. Nickel,died at her home in Belle Vernon,Tuesday evening,February 5,1918,at 7:30 o'clock. Mrs. Nickel was born in Rostraver township,March 8,1834,the daughter of James and Sarah Smith Springer. The Springers were among the original settlers of Rostraver township,having taken up land grants from the government in the early days of the republic. In 1852 she was married to Dr. Nickel,two children being born to the union,Dr. George E. Nickel who died about a year ago and Mrs. S.T.Enos,of Charleroi. One brother,Anselem Springer of Clinton,Iowa,and two grandchildren,Miss Edith Nickel of Belle Vernon and Dr. J.E.Enos of Charleroi,also survive. Mrs. Nickel was a member of the First Christian Church of Belle Vernon,and one of its most devoted attendants. Up until the 30th of January,when she was stricken with paralysis,whe was very active,being able to come and go and attend to all her household affairs in spite of the fact that she was almost 84 years of age. She was a highly respected resident of Belle Vernon,and numbered hundreds of its citizens among her friends.  Funeral services will be held at her late home Thursday afternoon, January 7,with interment private in the Belle Vernon Cemetery.
