Obituary

The first of the soldiers dead from France due in this district arrived Tuesday,December 22,1920,when the body of Louis Mitchell was brought to Belle Vernon,from New York,having arrived in port of December 15. The body was taken to the undertaking rooms of Hancock & Melenyzer,and will remain there until Sunday afternoon when it will be taken to the home of his mother,Mrs.Mary Mitchell on State street,for funeral services at three o'clock. The funeral will be in charge of the local Post of the American Legion and arangements will be made for the members of the Legion and all other ex-service men to attend the funeral,and pay their last respects to the young hero who made the supreme sacrifice in a foreign land. He was 24 years of age. He was the son of Carmine and Mary Mitchell of Belle Vernon. He left home and friends three years ago to do or die for his country. He was quickly ordered overseas and sailed for France on June 23,1918,ane was assigned to Co.A of the 146th Infantry,which saw much active service in the front lines. While in battle he was gassed and sent to the hospital where he died from its effects and pneumonia added.
