Obituary

Miss Belva Howes, aged 19 years,only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Howes of Fayette City,met death by drowning Sunday afernoon, July 8,1923 at Mineral Springs. The young lady in company with Miss Margaret McKibben,aged 17, of Pittsburgh,was attending summer school at Slipper Rock Norman,and secured permission to accompany another student, Miss Martha Shrading and her parents for a days outing at Mineral Springs.  During the afternoon,the girls went wading in a creek,and Miss Howes and Miss McKibben walking together on the ledge of a rock,suddenly stepped into a deep hole and disappeared from view. None of the party were able to swim and before any of the others could reach the two girls they had gone down for the third time.  The bodies were recovered half an hour later and removed to a morgue.   Miss Howes is a graduate of the Fayette City public schools and was taking the summer course at Slippery Rock Normal in preparation for a teaching assignment in the Washington township schools to which she had had been elected this year. The body will be brought to Fayette City for burial.
