James A. (Doc) Harper died suddenly at his home,552 Donner avenue, at 10:20 Friday morning,Jan. 2,1942 of a heart attack. While he had been ailing for some time,he had returned to his work and was about to depart for his duties Friday morning when he slumped in his chair and died. Born in Flatwoods,Pa.,a son of the late Andrew and Annie Harper,Mr. Harper came to Monessen 28 years ago. For 18 years he was employed as painting foreman for the Motz Lumber Co. and the last ten years he has been a member of the firm,Harper & Crowe,contract painters. Prior to coming to Monessen,Mr. Harper taught school at Smock. Surviving is his wife,Mrs. Betty Harper,one daughter, Mrs. Allen (Lillian) Stevenson,and two grandchildren,Jimmy and Suzanne Stevenson. A sister, Mrs. Edward Riley,of Rockford,Illinois,also survives,along with six brothers,William of Dearth,Pa.,George of Smock,John of Morris Cross Roads,Dave of Smock, Robert of Speers and Ray of Charleroi. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Christian Church on Sixth street. The body will be removed to the church from his late home at 10 o'clock Monday morning where it will lie in state until the funeral hour,Rev. O.E. Bennett,of Tarentum,former pastor of the Christian Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Belle Vernon Cemetery.
