R. Mitchell Steen Sr.,who worked for the Pittsburgh Steel Co. for more than a half century prior to his retirement in 1958,died early Wednesday,Feb. 5,1964 at 1 a.m. in Charleroi-Monessen Hospital. He was 72. Mr. Steen lived at 934 Fayette Road, Lynnwood, Belle Vernon. He retired as assistant master mechanic after 51 years of service with Pittsburgh Steel. Born in New Galilee,Pa.,Mr Steen came to Belle Vernon as a boy and made his home there ever since. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon and also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Belle Vernon Cemetery Association. He was preceed in death by his wife in 1957. Surviving are five children; Mrs. Regis (Virginia) Carroll of Charleroi, William of Belle Vernon,Sam of New York City,R. Mitchell,Jr., news editor of the Valley Independent in Monessen and Millicent,at home; one sister, Mrs. Francis (Marie) Odbert of Monessen. Also surviving are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
