Obituary

Anthony (Dunce) Ortolona,a former active union leader in Monessen,died Thursay,Sept.18,1975,at 10:30 a.m.in Charleroi Division of Mon Valley Hospital,after a lengthy illness. Mr.Ortolona,60,resided at Belle Vernon R.D.2. He helped organize Local Union 1229,CIO,Monessen,and served on the grievance committee for five years. First elected president of Local 1229 for the 1941-42 term,he served as president again from 1946 to 1948 and from 1960 to 1962. He was recording secretary in 1945 and vice president from 1956 to 1958. During his 1960-62 term,he also served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army,board of directors of Monessen Community Fund and headed the local March of Dimes drive. Mr.Ortolona was employed in the rod yard of the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.,and retired in 1969. He was also the former owner of Ortolona Beer Distributors in Rostraver Twp.and Tony's Grill in Monessen. Born in Monessen on March 12,1915,he was a son of the late Sam and Mariann Ortolona. He attended Monessen High School,where he played halfback on the varsity football team. He was a member of St.Sebastian Catholic Church,Belle Vernon. Surviving are his widow,Josephine Costantino Ortolona,two sons,Anthony J.and Joseph W.,both of Belle Vernon,three daughters,Mrs.James (Mariann) Posey of Sweeney Plan,Rostraver Twp.,Mrs.Eugene (Lucille) Sams of Dawson and Toni Jo,at home,three brothers,Sam,Jack and Louis,all of Monessen and nine grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Gerald R.Essey Funeral Home,626 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.Saturday and Sunday. Blessing services will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 9:30 a.m.,followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.in St.Sebastian Catholic Church,Belle Vernon. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Gerald R.Essey is funeral director in charge.
