Dr. Henry F. Owens,Monessen's only practicing negro dentist,died at his home early Sunday morning,January 2,1955. Dr. Owens, who lived at 853 Schoonmaker avenue,apparently succumbed to a heart attack at 1:05 a.m. He was 57 years old. The deceased,born in Cape May,N.J.,the son of Moses and Peggy Owens,had practiced dentistry in Monessen since 1925. He was a graduate of Howard University,class of 1918. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Dr. Owens was a pioneer member of the Valley chapter of the National Association for the Advancment of Colored People,of which he was named president emeritus in 1948. He was a member of the Union Baptist Church,Monessen. His survivors include his widow,Mrs. Maude Owens;two daughters, Peggy Ann,of New York City,and Mary Catherine,a student at Antioch College;a sister,Mary Catherine Owens,at home;and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Draper Funeral Home,608 Sixth street, Monessen,where private funeral services will be held Tuesday,Jan.4,at 11 a.m. Rev. H. Spencer will officiate,assisted by Rev. Boyd Hinton. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Beverly C. Draper,funeral director.
