Obituary

After an illness lasting about four weeks, Mrs. Mary Ellen McMahan died Thursday night,July 30,1914 at 8 o'clock at the Pittsburgh hospital. The demise of Mrs. McMahan removes one of the most widely known women in this section.  She was the widow of Alexander McMahan, owner of the farm upon which Monessen was founded and after whom McMahan borough was named. Mr. McMahan died Dec. 25,1909,after an illness of a few months and Mrs. McMahan continued to occupy the homestead, furnishing a home for the children left in orphanage. Until stricken by her last illness,Mrs. McMahan always enjoyed good health.  On July fourth while visiting friends in Pittsburgh, she had the misfortune to fall and fracture her hip. The injury was such that it was necessary to remove her to the hospital.  There she contracted pneumonia which greatly weakened her constitution, making a harder battle for her to overcome the injuries.  She lingered until last evening at the above hour. The deceased is survived by the following children,Mrs. Anis Tower,of Texas,Mrs. Agnes Lang,of Belle Vernon,Mrs. Thalia Fellows,of New Kensingon,Mrs. W.H.Watson,of Donora,Mrs. F.H.Hoffman,of Jeannette,Hugh and Layfayette McMahan,Marr,Lois and Nelle at home. The remains were brought here Friday afternoon.  The funeral will take place Monday morning from St. Leonard's Church,of which Mrs. McMahan was a member.
