Former North Belle Vernon Burgess Steven Leroy Jones died Wednesday afternoon;April 18;1962;in Charleroi-Monessen Hospital after an extended illness. He was 62. Mr.Jones was one of the community’s most active members befors a serious illness forced him into semi-retirement in 1960. He was hospitalized weeks ago. For 14 1/2 years;he served as burgess of North Belle Vernon. Before that;Mr.Jones was fire chief from 1928 to 1930 and police chief from 1930 to 1937. He resigned during his fourth term as burgess in June of 1960 because of failing health. Mr.Jones was a charter member of the Belle Vernon Lions Club and belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He worshipped at the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon. Born in Roscoe on Aug.7;1899;he was the son of the late David and Anna Morrison Jones. Most of his adult life was spent in North Belle Vernon. At the time of his death;he was on sick leave from the Allenport plant of the Pittsburgh Steel Co.where he was employed as a guard. Survivors include his widow Mrs.Lula Whitelaw Jones;at home;213 Speers St.;and one sister;Mrs.Jack Frazier;Belle Vernon. Friends will be received at the Harold R.Toner Funeral Home;Belle Vernon beginning Thursday;April 19;hours 1 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m. Services at 2 p.m.Saturday;April 21;1962. Dr.S.Arthur Talman;pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon;officiating. Interment at Belle Vernon Cemetery. Harold R.Toner is the funeral director.
